Team Japan
Team Japan waves to the sold-out stadium after winning the FIFA Women's World Cup 2011 in extra-time penalty kicks.

Nadeshiko Japan takes Women's World Cup in penalty kicks

Saki Kumagai completed a fairytale finish with the decisive spot kick as Japan stunned favorites the United States 3-1 on penalties to win the Women's World Cup for the first time after a 2-2 draw in extra time in Sunday's final in Frankfurt.

Tournament MVP Homare Sawa forced penalties with an equalizer in the second extra period as Japan twice came from behind, and goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori saved two penalties in the shootout before Kumagai buried the winner.

"I'm both delighted and surprised," said Kumagai. "I just hit the ball as hard as I could."

The world title, Japan's first at any level and the first by an Asian team, also provided a welcome lift to a country still reeling from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that ravaged the northeast coast, triggering an ongoing nuclear crisis.

Victory was also first in 25 meetings with the Americans, who were gunning for their third World Cup title after their victories in 1991 and 1999.

"My girls really played their hearts out," said Japan coach Norio Sasaki. "You never know which way it is going to go in a penalty shootout but we stayed cool. I am really surprised."

The Americans had taken the lead in the second-half of normal time through a superb strike from Alex Morgan, but Aya Miyama capitalized on poor defending to equalize in the 81st minute.

The U.S. went in front for the second time in the match in the 104th minute through Abby Wambach's header but Sawa flicked in a corner to secure the Golden Boot with her fifth goal of the tournament.

"I can't believe it," said Sawa, a veteran of five World Cups. "We have got this result because we never stopped fighting until the end. This has been my goal and now I can take home the gold medal."

After being presented with the gold trophy, Japan's players bounced around in delight on the podium before gathering behind a sign that read "Champions. World Champions."

And the team, whose Nadeshiko nickname comes from a pink frilled carnation symbolizing grace and beauty, are sure to be given a heroes' welcome when they return after capturing the imagination of the Japanese public.

Japan's win was their biggest giant-killing act of the tournament, having made it to final after their shock 1-0 defeat of Germany in the quarterfinals before they swept aside Sweden 3-1 in the semis.

Nahomi Kawasumi, who scored twice in her first start of the tournament in the win over Sweden, kept her place as Sasaki named an unchanged lineup.

The Japanese were given an early scare when Kaihori was forced to block with her legs after Lauren Cheney had created space for herself on the left flank following a slip by Azusa Iwashimizu with less than a minute gone.

Japan soaked up wave after wave of early pressure as Cheney again went close moments later when she stabbed Megan Rapinoe's cross just wide, before Wambach hit the bar with a rasping shot on 29 minutes.

Nadeshiko had to wait until the half-hour mark for their first chance, but Kozue Ando could only shoot straight at Hope Solo after being put through by Shinobu Ono.

The Americans continued to push and Sawa was forced to scramble clear after Morgan hit the post, and Kaihori tipped Wambach's header over the bar midway through the second period.

Japan made a double substitution, with Karina Maruyama and Yuki Nagasato coming on for Ono and Ando but the U.S. took the lead moments later when Morgan peeled away from Kumagai to blast into the far corner.

But Miyama punished sloppy defending from Rachel Buehler and Alex Krieger to slot home and send the game into extra time.

Wambach headed in to put the Americans ahead for a second time before Sawa sent the game to a shootout.

"It hasn't sunk in yet and I just can't believe it. We have achieved something amazing," said Kaihori, who saved penalties from Shannon Boxx and Tobin Heath.

"This sort of thing only happens on television. I conceded twice in the match so just put my heart into the shootout."

"I'm so relieved. Every one of us is an MVP. Our opponents were on top of us for long periods but this a step to build a new Nadeshiko Japan," added Miyama.

Midfielder Mizuho Sakaguchi was delighted to give the Americans a little payback.

"I'm happy that we could put one over on them on a stage as big as this. We all told each other not to give up when the going was tough."
